چکیده

In 1995, NTT Laboratories have started a joint research project on ultra high-speed communications with public research organizations using a large scale network testbed having the maximum speed of 2.4 Gb/s. Among many applications tried in the first phase of the project, the realtime VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) has proved to be benefited greatly from the high performance communications technologies. With the realtime data transmission using high-speed communications network, the bottleneck regarding the data transfer in the conventional VLBI system can be removed. Furthermore, as the bandwidths of the network become larger, the performance of the observation system will become better. In the second phase of the project started in 1998, therefore, the focus is placed on the advancement of this real-time VLBI technology. Extensive research items regarding the realtime VLBI technology are being conducted, together with the scientific observations using the testbed. So far, through the experiments using the developed realtime VLBI system, great improvement in observation performance has been achieved. This paper explains the outline of this research project from the viewpoint of communications technologies which play a major role in the realtime VLBI system.

2 00 8 Towards millimeter VLBI

We discuss the present performance and the future perspectives of VLBI in the 3 mm to 0.85 mm observing bands (so called mm-VLBI). The availability of new telescopes for mm-VLBI and the recent technical development towards larger observing bandwidth and higher data-rates now allow to image with 3mm-VLBI hundreds of sources with high dynamic range. At 1.3 mm, pilot VLBI studies have proven detec...

Field Experiment on 5-Gbit/s Ultra-high-speed Packet Transmission Using MIMO Multiplexing in Broadband Packet Radio Access

Hidekazu Taoka and Kenichi Higuchi An ultra-high-speed packet transmission experiment for achieving a transmission data rate of approximately 5 Gbit/s (spectral efficiency of 50 bit/s/Hz) was performed using a 100-MHz channel bandwidth in broadband packet radio access. The spectrum efficiency of 50 bit/s/Hz nearly approaches the upper limit in cellular environments near a cell site taking into ...

Post - Newtonian Treatment of the VLBI Experiment on September 8 , 2002

Gravitational physics of VLBI experiment conducted on September 8, 2002 and dedicated to measure the speed of gravity is treated in the first post-Newtonian approximation. Explicit speed-of-gravity parameterization is introduced to the Einstein equations to single out the retardation effect associated with the finite speed of gravity in the relativistic time delay of light propagating in the gr...
